One of the most critical components in fishing is to make sure that your rig stays together. Too many a times has it occurred (not to me) where lines were simply stripped off the hook, or the hook bent out of shape from the antics of a runaway fish.
This reminds me of the time when Coho and Chinook watched me catch Aussie salmon for the first time. My action was to reel the fish in as quickly as I could, and run up the beach at the same time. Italian fishing they called it. In fact, Chinook said I was lucky I didn't end up with just a set of fish lips on the hook. The fish bounced on the water coming in ! My knots never slipped, and I'm happy to say I have refined my retrieval technique somewhat since then.
